Ball State Sports Link Feature: Kolbrin Vitek (Baseball)

By Greg Liebbe & Steven Towle | Ball State Sports Link MUNCIE, Ind. -- Just two weeks into the 2010 season, Ball State's Kolbrin Vitek has already been named the Mid-American Conference Baseball Player of the Week twice. To the junior second baseman, awards are not very important. However, the two early league honors plus being named to three preseason All-America teams have brought attention to Vitek and the Cardinals. "I think more than anything Kolbrin has learned how to actually be a true hitter," says BSU head coach Greg Beals. "He's always had the ability, but now his knowledge at the plate is the thing he has learned more than anything." Last week Vitek paced the Cardinals' attack at UAB as he posted a .389 batting average (7-of-18) and a .944 slugging percentage in the four-game series. He tallied three home runs on the weekend while scoring a team-high six runs and driving in four runs. On the season, Vitek is leading the team and fourth in the MAC with a .438 batting average as he leads the conference with 14 hits in his first seven games. He also tossed 5.0 innings of one-run baseball Sunday as he limited the Blazers to just five hits. "It's special to have a player of his talent," Beals added. "It's a challenge for us as coaches to manage his talent and put him in the best situations. Hes very dominating at times on the mound and will be our Sunday starter all year." Vitek and the Cardinals are preparing to head to the Carolinas for nine games in 10 days. Ball ...
